InstantSpeak Spanish Tutorial

Lessons

Step 1: Log into InstantSpeak account and go to lesson 1.

Once logged in, you will be directed to the lessons page. This page contains an index of over 100 lessons in the program. Click lesson 1. The first screen in each lesson contains a recording of the entire dialog for the lesson. Users can play back the dialog at normal or slow speeds. Click play and listen to the conversation.

The conversation will not make sense to you the first time you listen to it, but you should listen to it at least once when you start the lesson. By the time the lesson is complete you will be able to fully understand and take part in the conversation.

Step 2: Click the "Conversation sentences" section from the Lesson sections index on the left.

This section displays the individual sentences that make up the dialog.

Click "Listen" next to a sentence or word to hear the item.

All sentences and words from the conversation can be played back at normal and slow speeds.

Step 4: Add items to flash cards for review

Click the check boxes next to the items you want to review, select a flash card set from the drop down menu and click "Add." The flash card section is where you will learn to speak the items.

Step 5: Click the "Language points" section from the Lesson sections index on the left.

The language points section contains a complete grammatical analysis of the conversation. It also includes other useful notes that others have made when practicing the material with native speakers. This background information will be useful while learning the material. If the Language points section is available for a particular lesson you should take the time to understand everything in that section.

Step 6: Click the "Vocabulary and phrases" section from the Lesson sections index on the left.

This section contains vocabulary and phrases that are used in the lesson and additional material from the Vocabulary tab and Phrases tab.

If you would like to add all items from the lesson to your flash cards, click the "Add lesson to flash cards" link from the Lesson sections index on the left.

Flash Cards section

Step 1: Define flash card sets

Click on the Flash Cards tab and then on the "Manage Sets" section. This section lets you organize your flash cards by defining sets you will later place your flash cards in. For example, you could keep track of which cards you reviewed on certain days by naming sets by date.

Step 2: Place cards in flash cards section

You need to have some flash cards in your flash cards tab before beginning this part of the tutorial. Click here for a detailed explanation about how to move cards into your flash cards tab.

Step 3: Set options for flash cards

Click on the "Options" link in the flash cards section. This section lets you set options that effect whether the question or answer is displayed first, the order that the cards are displayed in, and how much information is given in the answer. The "Display only sound in answer section of card" option is selected as default and is recommended for learning to speak once you understand how to pronounce the words for a particular card. This is because this option only lets you listen to the sound for the answer. The more detailed information is a good option while you are learning to pronounce the item, but it is better that you do not read the pronunciation while learning to speak.

Step 4: Review cards

Click on the "Flash Cards" link in the flash cards tab. Then from the drop down menu select a flash card set to begin review. Read the "Question" and say the translation aloud. It is very important that you attempt to speak the translation every time you see the question. Then press "Show answer." Listen to the answer if needed and press "Correct" or "Incorrect" based on your answer. To hear each syllable in the answer click on "Options."

Step 4: Review results

The results section in the flash cards tab displays the cards from the most recently reviewed set and information information about your answer. Here you can review individual cards. To make a new set of flash cards from cards where at least one incorrect answer was given, press "Make new set from missed cards."
